And the best part? You can make it with just a handful of ingredients from your kitchen. This recipe is quick, flavorful, and totally customizable. Perfect for mornings, evenings, or any time you need that comforting chai hug.
Bonus: It pairs perfectly with cookies.
Takes around 10 minutes
- 2 cups of milk (full cream for richer taste)
- 2 teaspoons black tea leaves
- 2–3 teaspoons sugar (adjust to taste)
- 2–3 green cardamom pods
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 2–3 cloves
- A small piece of fresh ginger: crushed or grated
- A pinch of black pepper (optional) for an extra kick
Crush the spices: Crush ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper (if using).
Boil milk: In a saucepan, add milk and bring it to a boil for 1–2 minutes. Watch carefully! Milk can overflow quickly!
Mixing: Add the crushed spices and simmer for 2–3 minutes to release their flavors.
Add tea leaves: Add the black tea leaves and let them simmer for another 2 minutes. You’ll notice the rich, dark color developing.
Add sugar: Stir in the sugar slowly and bring the mixture back to a gentle boil for 2-3 minutes. This step allows the flavors to meld beautifully, giving the tea a creamy texture.
Strain & serve: Filter the tea into cups using a fine mesh strainer. Your perfect cup of masala chai is ready.
Frothy top: Whisk the chai for 20-30 seconds before pouring to get a light froth on top.
Cookie companion: Serve with buttery biscuits, ginger cookies, or your favorite choco chip cookies for a café vibe at home.
Twist: Add a few saffron strands while simmering for a luxurious, golden touch.
